Today, we are hearing from the newest member of the Beacon Academy family, Mr. Jay Young, who has the following message to share:

Hello!

My name is Jay Young and I am new to Beacon Academy. I took over the Technical Support position for Nevada’s Online High School and look forward to getting to know you all. Although I am new here, I have known quite a bit about Beacon Academy, the technical aspects of the infrastructure, and the laptops issued to students and staff. I have been living in Las Vegas for About 5 1/2 years now along with my wife, Britt, who is a teacher at Beacon Academy, and our month-old daughter, Cecelia. Even though I am the “computer guy,” I do enjoy other things. Britt and I are both New York natives and tend to have very passionate opinions when it comes to Baseball and Basketball teams. I’m also a huge music fan and love spending time going to shows or playing the instruments I’ve acquired over the years. Hopefully, your experiences with me and my abilities are all positive. Please don’t hesitate to drop me a line or email if you have any questions or concerns or if you’d just like to say hi. Have a Great weekend!

The Beacon Academy staff is glad to have Jay on board and we hope everyone will welcome him in his new position as Technical Support Services.

The end of the semester is literally around the corner. For seniors the end of their accredited online high school classes may have come faster than they expected. With only 2 weeks to go in the semester it’s very important that students of Beacon Academy, an accredited virtual high school in Nevada, buckle down and continue working hard in their classes. For one population this could be the difference between graduating and not graduating. With the end in sight, seniors need to push through these last couple weeks and not let that all too common “senior-itis” take over.

Our Beacon Academy of Nevada seniors need to focus on their goal and determine what’s necessary to get there. Is it that they just need to finish these last few classes this semester or do they also have to retake a proficiency exam? If it’s just classes it is very important for seniors to pass all their classes and to do this they will need to stay on top of their weekly work. If retaking a proficiency exam(s) is also necessary then graduating seniors will have one more opportunity in July to retake any exam they have not been able to pass.

On top of working through classes it is also important for our virtual online charter high school seniors to finalize their plans for after high school. By now seniors, whether they live in Clark County, Nye County, Lincoln County, Esmeralda County or Mineral County, or anywhere else in Nevada, should have completed the FAFSA, completed a few college applications and hopefully received acceptance letters. If these steps haven’t happened it’s not too late. There is still time to complete the FAFSA and submit college applications to start in the fall. The deadline for fall college enrollment is usually June 1st. So there is still time!

Another important event for seniors to think about is Beacon Academy’s Graduation Ceremony. The Las Vegas graduation ceremony will be on Saturday June 16th. This is a special occasion and we want to make it an afternoon that both seniors and their families will remember for a lifetime. Earning your accredited online high school diploma is hard work and what better way to celebrate being finished than to walk across the stage so that family and friends can make a fuss over their student. It’s both a beginning and an end and we wish all seniors to have a happy ending and a bright beginning towards the rest of their lives.

At Beacon Academy, the school year is coming to a close and it is time we reflect on Beaconcraft.

Setting up a Minecraft server at Beacon Academy was, if nothing else, an experiment that sought to answer some of the following questions:

How would students and teachers receive a Minecraft server at their virtual online high school?

What would students create in their own online high school server?

Would virtual high school students collaborate on projects naturally or would they need an extra push?

Could students’ undirected creatiivity inspire teachers to get involved and use Minecraft in their online high school classes?

Before we answer these questions, here is a brief history of the program.

Beaconcraft launched as a Vanilla Minecraft server on December 20 with 14 participants white-listed. At that time, builds did not stray far from the central spawn point. The server was later updated to CraftBukkit and now uses a small variety fo plug-ins for fun and utility. Because the population is small, no anti-griefing or world-edit software has been included thus far. While the participant list has grown over the past five months, server activity has declined as students focus on completing their online high school classes and earning their high school diplomas online.

Next Week: Answering some questions about Beaconcraft.

Wow! Who would have believed it? We are rapidly approaching the close of another successful school year at Beacon Academy of Nevada, Nevada’s Online High School. Our seniors are making the final push to complete all of their free online high school courses. Their focus: their accredited online high school diploma from Beacon Academy of Nevada.

Some of you may be wondering…a virtual high school? Do Beacon Academy students get to have a formal graduation ceremony? Absolutely! In fact, Beacon Academy has a lot of activities for our students. This includes a formal prom, which was a smashing success.

However, before we get ahead of ourselves, all of the school’s students are focused on finishing up their classes. A few have procrastinated but it is usually around this time frame in the school year when they kick it into high gear and streak to the finish line. All of the teachers, tutors, staff, and admin personnel are focused on working with our students to help get them over the finish line. We want to see them work and succeed in their quest for their Nevada high school diploma.

Once our students complete their online high school diploma program they will be on their way to a better and brighter future. If you think you might be interested in joining the educational wave of the future, come check out Beacon Academy. We are a homegrown Nevada statewide virtual online high school. Our goal is to give you the opportunity to earn your free online high school diploma and to go on to bigger and better things. As mentioned above, since we are a statewide virtual online high school, you can live in Clark County, Nye County, Lincoln County, Esmeralda County or Mineral County and be part of the Beacon Academy family and earn your high school education.

The end of school is only three weeks away! That means you only have three weeks to wrap-up everything in your online high school classes so that you can move forward next year. For our seniors, that also means that you have only three weeks left in a Nevada High School and that your accredited high school diploma is right around the corner.

Although we are a Nevada online high school, our students are still able to experience the traditional graduation ceremony, complete with stages, speeches, and Pon and Circumstance. We have two graduation ceremonies this year: In Reno on June 8 and in Las Vegas on June 15. Each year, Beacon Academy’s graduation ceremony is as unique as the graduating class and and the seniors of 2013 are no exception. The students have something extra special planned but you will have to attend the ceremony to find out what they are planning. Join us in celebrating our seniors who are earning their Nevada high school diplomas online with Beacon Academy. The class of 2013 is our largest to date and we are excited to accord special honors for our students who completed all four years of their Nevada high school educationwith Beacon Academy.

With only three weeks left, now is not the time to start taking it easy in your online high school classes. We know that this is the hardest time of year to remain focused but keep drilling down until the end: Your effort is worth it! Remember, Beacon Academy offers face-to-face tutoring in both Las Vegas and Reno on Mondays through Thursdays. Take advantage of the opportunity over the next three weeks so you can stay on track!

Juniors and Seniors of Beacon Academy of Nevada, online free charter school from home, it’s not too late to find money for college! This month’s scholarship bulletin was emailed to student’s school email accounts recently. This monthly bulletin is put together by the school counselor so that students can look through it and apply to any and all scholarships that they may qualify for.

Why are scholarships important? Scholarships are important because first, after you earn your free online high school diploma, they help students find money to help pay for college during a time when college is often times thought unreachable due to the expense. In today’s society, many families struggle to make it each month. Many luxuries are given up or overlooked. Some families unfortunately view college or higher education as a luxury and thus unattainable for some students because working to help support the family is a necessity just to survive. In reality, higher education is absolutely a necessity in order to obtain successful jobs that will pay enough to survive. Every scholarship a student is awarded is less money out of the students or families pocket and less in financial aid the student will need to borrow. Those determined students who search for scholarships and take the initiative to apply will find scholarships that they qualify for. Sadly, many scholarships are going unused because students don’t apply either out of fear of rejection or simply not knowing. I like to tell my students that even if they think they won’t get it they should still apply because what if no one else applies and they were the only one too. If they don’t apply they’ll never know.

Secondly, applying for scholarships also teaches students to follow directions and write on a given topic – a topic that is often about themselves or their viewpoint. Some may ask why is being able to follow directions and write on a given topic important? This is important because throughout life, students will be faced with writing tasks given by employers, coworkers, future professors, and even friends and family all of which will expect the student to produce a knowledgeable piece of writing that discusses what was asked. These tasks aren’t always meant to be hard or severely challenging but often simple and to aid in something that is going on at work, in school or in life; something as simple as a blog for example. Not challenging but very thought provoking and meant to reach many families of potential students. If the student learns to do this effectively early on, then later in life these small tasks won’t be daunting and can easily be completed.

So how can Beacon Academy of Nevada help students with this? First, each month the counselor provides a monthly scholarship bulletin that is full with current and future scholarships which include deadlines for any and all students to look through and apply for – this is the starting point for students looking for ways to pay for college. This bulletin also contains information from all of the major colleges and community colleges in Nevada regarding scholarships as well. Secondly, the academic courses that students will take throughout their high school career and especially with Beacon Academy of Nevada will challenge them to write properly and effectively on any given topic.

Closing comments for this week include: scholarships are essentially free money for students who take the initiative and apply. By applying for scholarships, students will also build upon already instilled lifelong skills that are necessary throughout life to be a successful, thriving individual. After you earn your free online high school diploma here in Nevada, you will want to have received these scholarships and applied them to your college years as you expand your education. Remember, we take students from across the state of Nevada so whether you live in Clark County, Nye County, White Pine County, Lincoln County, Esmeralda County or Mineral County you can take your accredited online high school classes with Beacon Academy.
